Know Your Superfood: Spirulina
Find out why this algae was called “the best food for the future” at the United Nations World Food Conference.
What It Is
Spirulina is a naturally occurring algae that grows in water. Discovered in the saltwater lakes of South Africa and America where it was harvested and dried, it can be found in pill or powder form today at most health food stores.
Why Take It
Spirulina is a complete food source containing over 60% protein, with 8 essential amino acids needed by human beings. It is an ideal food source for vegetarians, containing vitamin B12 that is not readily found in other plant-based foods. High in iron, magnesium and calcium (it has more than twenty times the calcium found in milk!), spirulina is also great for pregnant mothers. The dark green color of spirulina indicates its high chlorophyll level, purifying blood, reducing toxic build-up, and promoting the growth and repair of body tissues. It’s also one of the best sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a good fat necessary for the proper functioning of the human brain and other body systems.
How to Take It
It is important to buy high-quality spirulina that is preferably organic. We added spirulina when creating The Essential Greens for a hit of energizing supernutrients whenever you need it. We also like adding an extra tablespoon of spirulina into our morning green smoothies when we feel like we might be coming down with a cold or during a particularly rigorous training schedule for added assurance that our body has all it needs to recover.
