Should you Pregame your Workout with Coffee?

Should you or shouldn’t you? MyMaha founder Hairin Bahren discusses the advantages and disadvantages of pre-gaming your workout with coffee.

  • Should you Pregame your Workout with Coffee?

In an ideal world, I would leisurely sip a soy Americano at 8am, get a workout in at 10am and then carry on with the rest of my day. What happens in the real world is that I usually sleepily head to the gym at 5.30am sans coffee, in order to keep the rest of the day’s commitments.

My ideal scenario usually happens on weekends and after six years of keeping to this schedule, one thing is clear, my 10am post-coffee workouts are markedly better than most of pre-coffee 5.30am workouts. Aside from my body’s general sleepiness in the early morning, coffee surely must play a role in this. I did a little research and here’s what I found:

  1. Coffee has fat-burning properties. Studies suggest that the caffeine in coffee encourages the body to burn fat over glucose. Caffeine has also been shown to increase metabolic rate – meaning that the body is able to burn more fat throughout the day.
  2. Coffee leads to better workout performance. Coffee has been linked with increased blood flow and muscles are powered by the circulation of blood. When your muscles are better powered, you are able to work out harder over a longer period of time.
  3. Along the same vein, coffee also increases focus and decreases perceived muscle pain, meaning that you can lift heavier without feeling extreme discomfort. It has also been linked with decreased post-workout soreness and better recovery between workouts.

So should you pregame your workout with coffee? If you already drink coffee, then, probably, yes for the above reasons. Some things to remember – coffee is incredibly habit-forming and you should use it sparingly to avoid dependence and dehydration. Definitely do not consume in quantities that cause jitteriness and heart palpitations. A small shot of espresso 30 minutes before your workout or a cup of coffee 1-2 hours before a workout usually gets the job done.
