Indigenous to Southern China, the ginger is known for its natural healing properties and the aromatic and spicy flavor it brings to food. The skin of a ginger is typically yellowish brown but could also be yellow or white depending on the variety of ginger.

Ginger is a staple in Chinese, Indian and Middle-Eastern cuisines but has also been used for centuries as a treatment for morning sickness, muscle pain relief, gastro-intestinal issues, nausea and indigestion. Ginger also clears the nasal passages, preventing mucus buildup and has been linked to the prevention of cancer due to its strong anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is the reason for most illnesses and ginger inhibits the enzymes that contribute to cell inflammation, preventing illness.

Fresh-cut peeled ginger steeped in hot water is a calming tea that is soothing to the digestive tract. Diane von Furstenburg is a fan of this calming remedy.
