What It Is
Originating from the Himalayas that stretch across Asia from China to India, Himalayan pink salt is extracted from salt mines that formed million of years ago during the Jurassic era. Considered a full-spectrum salt that is one of the purest in the world, it manages to retain its minerals as its crystallized salt beds were covered by lava and were untouched for years. Himalayan pink salt ranges in color from light pink to red, depending on the iron oxide deposits that colours it.
Why Take It
Sodium is essential to the functioning of the human body. Unfortunately, common table salt is usually stripped off all beneficial minerals except for sodium and chloride and is then treated with chemicals and heat. Himalayan pink salt retains essential minerals that the body needs like magnesium and potassium that are necessary in the balancing of electrolytes in the body, the regulation of blood pressure and muscle recovery. Compared to table salt, Himalayan pink salt has a richer flavor and retains its flavor even after cooking.
How to Take It
Himalayan sea salt is great as a condiment to enhance flavor in food. Its pink hue and coarse grain is beautiful used as a garnish. Out of the kitchen Himalayan sea salt has been used for years for its therapeutic properties. It is relaxing as bath salt and is an excellent exfoliating salt scrub when paired with coconut or olive oil.
